Mysterious Oil Appears on Hands of Praying Teen in Philippines

Davao City, Philippines — A teenager leading a youth prayer group has become the center of spiritual curiosity and reverence after witnesses say a fragrant oil began appearing on his hands during worship — without any physical source or explanation.

Fifteen-year-old Marco Reyes, a soft-spoken student at a local Catholic high school, was leading prayer on a humid Friday evening when several of his peers noticed his palms glistening under the room’s fluorescent lights. What they initially mistook for sweat soon proved to be something else entirely — a thicker, clear substance with a scent described as a blend of roses, myrrh, and frankincense.

“It smelled like something holy,” said 16-year-old Janelle Cruz, a regular at the youth meetings. “You could feel the room shift when it happened. Some of us started crying and didn’t even know why.”

When the meeting ended, leaders and parents present inspected Marco’s hands and shirt for signs of spilled oils or cologne. None was found. A thorough inspection of the prayer room revealed no traces of anointing oil, scented candles, or chemical residue — just the faint, lingering aroma that clung to Marco’s fingertips.

The oil has reportedly manifested on three separate occasions over the past month, each time during deep prayer. The most recent incident occurred as Marco prayed silently over a classmate who had asked for intercession regarding a family illness. “It was like the moment he touched his friend’s shoulder, the oil returned,” said youth coordinator Paolo Mendoza.

Local clergy have taken interest, with Father Roberto Salazar from the Archdiocese visiting to witness the group and examine Marco himself. “There is no official declaration from the Church,” he cautioned, “but we are observing. Scripture tells us of the anointing of the Spirit. Sometimes the Lord speaks in quiet miracles.”

A small vial of the oil was collected by one of the group’s volunteers and sent to a private lab in Manila. The results ruled out synthetic or industrial perfume origins. According to the lab report, the compound was natural, but “its full botanical composition remains unidentified.” The report did note that it resembled the aromatic oils used in ancient religious rites.

Marco, who is described as gentle and devout, has no explanation. He said he began praying more seriously only a year ago after his mother recovered from a near-fatal illness. “Maybe God is just reminding me not to stop,” he said simply. “I feel closest to Him when I’m praying with others.”

Since news of the phenomenon spread, youth attendance at the prayer group has more than doubled. Some have come out of curiosity, but many report feeling “peace” or “a strange warmth” during the gatherings. Several teens have begun attending weekly Mass again after months or years away.

The parish has refrained from labeling the event a miracle, but encourages discernment and prayer. “Sometimes the most powerful signs come through the humblest hearts,” said Father Roberto. “Whether it is divine or not, one thing is certain — God is stirring something in the hearts of our youth.”
