Bible Sales Surge Among Generation Z Amid Growing Spiritual Curiosity

Sales of the Bible in Britain have experienced a significant increase, largely attributed to the growing spiritual curiosity among Generation Z. Between 2019 and 2024, Bible sales rose by 87%, reaching £5.02 million. This surge is notable, especially considering the overall decline in non-fiction book sales during the same period. Religious literature, in general, has defied this trend, with total spending reaching £25.2 million in 2024.

The Bible Society’s Good News Bible – The Youth Edition, designed to help young readers understand key passages with explanations and infographics, has seen its sales nearly double since 2021. Surveys indicate that Generation Z is less likely to identify as atheist compared to Gen X, with a significant proportion of young people seeing themselves as “spiritual” rather than adhering to specific religions.

Key factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and mental health issues seem to have prompted deeper considerations of spirituality among young people, who are actively seeking out Christian texts.
