Islamic Scholars Issue Landmark Fatwa on Environmental Responsibility

Location: Mecca, Saudi Arabia

A group of leading Islamic scholars has issued a groundbreaking fatwa (religious ruling) declaring that environmental stewardship is a religious duty in Islam. The ruling, presented at the annual Mecca Conference on Faith and Sustainability, urges Muslims worldwide to take action against deforestation, pollution, and climate change.

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais, one of the scholars behind the ruling, stated, “The Quran calls for the protection of creation. As Muslims, we are caretakers of the Earth, and it is our moral responsibility to prevent harm to our environment.” The fatwa has been welcomed by Muslim environmental activists and is expected to influence policies in majority-Muslim nations.
