Underground Church Movement Thrives in China Despite Crackdowns

Location: Beijing, China

Despite increasing government restrictions on religious practices in China, underground Christian churches continue to grow. Secret house churches, often meeting in homes, warehouses, or remote areas, are seeing an unprecedented surge in attendance as believers seek spaces to worship freely.

Authorities have tightened regulations on religious gatherings, forcing many churches to operate in secrecy. However, Chinese Christians remain undeterred, relying on coded messages, encrypted apps, and personal networks to communicate meeting times and locations.

“Faith cannot be silenced,” said Pastor Liu Cheng, who leads an underground church in Beijing. “The more restrictions are placed on us, the more our faith grows stronger.”

Despite the risks of imprisonment, fines, and raids, the underground church movement continues to expand, with estimates suggesting that there are now over 100 million Christians in China.
