Despite increasing government crackdowns on religious gatherings, China’s underground Christian church movement is experiencing rapid growth, with estimates suggesting that over 120 million Chinese citizens are now practicing Christianity in secret house churches.
Authorities have banned unregistered churches, confiscated Bibles, and arrested pastors, yet believers continue to meet in homes, basements, and remote villages to worship. Many are using encrypted messaging apps and digital Bibles to stay connected with their faith communities.
“Faith cannot be silenced,” said Pastor Liu Ming, a leader of one of Beijing’s largest underground congregations. “We know the risks, but the Gospel is worth it.” Global Christian organizations have increased efforts to provide resources to these persecuted believers, smuggling Bibles and training leaders to continue spreading the faith.
