Theological Scholars Debate the Role of Women in Early Christianity

Oxford, UK — A groundbreaking symposium at Oxford University has reignited global discussion about the role of women in early Christianity. The event brought together theologians, historians, and religious leaders to analyze newly discovered texts that suggest women played a more significant role in the early church than previously thought.

One manuscript, found in a monastery in Syria, refers to a female leader presiding over a Christian congregation in the 2nd century. The text, written in Syriac, uses terms that suggest equality between male and female leaders.

“These findings challenge traditional narratives and invite us to reexamine the roots of gender roles in Christianity,” said Professor Helen Carter, a New Testament scholar.

The symposium concluded with calls for further research and dialogue on the topic, particularly within denominations debating the ordination of women.
