Surge in Christian Pilgrimages to the Holy Land as Travel Restrictions Ease

Location: Jerusalem, Israel

Following years of travel limitations due to the global pandemic, Christian pilgrims are once again returning in record numbers to the Holy Land. Israel’s Ministry of Tourism reports a 35% increase in visits to Christian landmarks such as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Sea of Galilee, and the Mount of Beatitudes.

Many pilgrims cite spiritual renewal and a desire to connect physically with biblical history after years of virtual worship. Churches in Jerusalem are offering extended programs, including guided scripture walks and night-time worship at historic sites. “Being here where Jesus walked renews my faith in ways online services never could,” said Maria Calderon, a visitor from Spain.

Religious leaders across denominations have applauded this revival of in-person faith journeys. The World Council of Churches has launched an initiative to ensure pilgrimages remain sustainable and inclusive for Christians of all backgrounds.
