With rising food insecurity in India, Hindu temples across the country have expanded their charity efforts, offering free meals to millions through traditional langar (community kitchens). The initiative, led by the ISKCON movement and major temple trusts, aims to feed low-income families struggling with inflation and unemployment.
One of the largest kitchens, located in Vrindavan, serves over 50,000 meals daily. Volunteers prepare food around the clock, ensuring that no one leaves hungry. “This is the essence of our faith—serving others selflessly,” said temple trustee Swami Rajananda Saraswati. The movement has gained support from corporate donors and government agencies, helping to sustain the initiative in major cities.
