Location: Galilee, Israel
A team of Christian archaeologists and biblical scholars have identified a site in northern Israel that they believe could be the actual location of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The discovery was made in the Galilean hills, where ancient roads from the time of Christ intersect, supporting theories that large crowds could have gathered there to hear Jesus preach.
The team used satellite imaging, historical records, and biblical geography to pinpoint the site. They also uncovered remnants of early Christian worship structures, suggesting that the area was considered sacred by Jesus’ followers in the 1st century AD.
“This discovery could bring us closer to understanding the setting of one of Christ’s most important teachings,” said Professor Daniel Carter, a biblical historian involved in the study. The Beatitudes—‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven’—may have first been spoken here. The site will now be open to pilgrims seeking to walk where Jesus once taught.
