Florence, Italy — Excavations beneath the iconic Florence Cathedral have revealed an ancient Christian chapel dating back to the 4th century AD. The discovery, made during restoration work, includes a stunning mosaic floor depicting early Christian symbols, such as the ichthys (fish), the Chi-Rho, and depictions of the Good Shepherd.
“This find is extraordinary,” said Dr. Elena Romano, the lead archaeologist. “It provides a tangible connection to the early days of Christianity in Italy.”
The chapel is believed to have been part of a larger complex used by early Christians before the construction of the current cathedral. Alongside the mosaic floor, researchers uncovered fragments of ancient altar pieces and inscriptions, some of which include early prayers in Latin.
Plans are already underway to incorporate the chapel into the cathedral’s visitor tours, offering a unique glimpse into the origins of Christianity in Europe.
