Tours, France — A team of archaeologists in central France has uncovered the remains of a 9th-century church buried beneath a medieval castle. The discovery, made during a restoration project, includes a beautifully preserved mosaic floor, marble altar, and relics of early saints.
The church is believed to have been a significant pilgrimage site during the early medieval period, offering a glimpse into the spiritual lives of those who lived in the region.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery,” said Dr. Alain Dupont, a historian leading the excavation. “It connects us directly to the faith and artistry of our ancestors.”
Local authorities plan to preserve the site and develop it into a cultural heritage attraction, complete with guided tours and educational programs.
